Common questions.
What are the basic types of auto coverage?
- Liability — helps cover injuries or property damage you cause to others in an accident. Required by Texas law.
- Collision — helps repair or replace your own vehicle after a covered collision, subject to your deductible.
- Comprehensive — covers events beyond collisions, such as theft, hail, or vandalism.
- Personal injury protection — helps with medical bills and related costs for you and your passengers, no matter who's at fault.
- Uninsured and underinsured motorist — an option to consider when the other driver has little or no insurance.
- Medical payments — helps pay medical expenses after a covered accident, regardless of fault.
- Some of these are required by state law; others are optional.
How is the price of my policy determined?
Think of your policy as several separate coverages. Each type of coverage has its own premium — add up the ones you need and you have the price of your policy. Adjusting the coverages you may not need gives you some control over cost.
How much liability coverage should I consider?
Texas requires drivers to carry minimum auto liability insurance, but the state minimum may not provide enough protection if you're involved in a serious accident.
Texas state minimum coverage
Texas requires at least the following — commonly referred to as 30/60/25 coverage:
- $30,000 — bodily injury per person
- $60,000 — bodily injury per accident
- $25,000 — property damage per accident
Why state minimum coverage may not be enough
- Medical bills can quickly become expensive after a serious accident.
- Vehicle repairs and replacement costs can exceed $25,000.
- If damages are higher than your insurance limits, you may be personally responsible for the remaining costs.
- Your personal assets and future income could potentially be at risk in a lawsuit.
Consider higher liability limits
For greater financial protection, you may want to consider 100/300/100 coverage or higher:
- $100,000 — bodily injury per person
- $300,000 — bodily injury per accident
- $100,000 — property damage per accident
Bottom line
State minimum coverage helps you meet Texas' legal requirement. Higher limits can provide more financial protection. Your ideal coverage depends on your individual circumstances, assets, budget, and insurance needs — speak with a licensed insurance professional to determine appropriate coverage for you.
Does my lender require certain coverages?
Collision and comprehensive aren't required by state law, but your bank or lender may require them while you have an auto loan. You can usually choose a deductible for each.
